After launching my blog last year we’ve shared many experiences together, which was the purpose of this whole thing. So I guess you could say it’s been a success. Thank you for being a part of this journey. I’ve also got to work with some great brands and there’s some really exciting stuff in the pipeline. Watch this space…
Now, after reading a post from one of my favorite blogs, Buckets & Spades, about fake followings across social media, it really got me thinking – how many of my followers are actually genuine? And how can I find out?
|Following research it turns out that Instagram in particular is becoming a platform for ‘Ghost Followers’. Someone who follows you, perhaps after using a particular hashtag, but then never engages with you and becomes inactive. I’ve also discovered that there are 100’s of apps which are used to gain likes or a massive following – Yuk! Personally I agree with Mat that this is unfair and dishonest. Each platform should be doing a lot more to stop this and protect their spaces. It’s really sad to see that some of my favorite accounts are most likely using these underhand tactics *sad face*.
Take a look for yourself at the ‘following’ section on Insta. If you see people liking random posts that make no sense, chances are they are using an app or bot.
If you have time, Mat’s post (And the experiment he took part in) is interesting, eye opening and definitely worth a read. He also produces regular, engaging content so is worth a follow too!
After research and analysis of my following on Instagram it turns out that a lot a ‘Ghosts’. Shocking? Yeah, tell me about it – gutted.
I gained a large following quite quickly. Especially after my posts were featured on accounts like ‘The Lens Bible’ and the ‘Popular’ page. But it’s really disappointing to find out that so many are ‘Ghosts’. However, my sister reassured me. I’ve still got a loyal following who appreciate what I produce and engage with me regularly. So thank you once again, you know who you are!
I’ve now found an app that will block the ‘Ghosts’. It’s going to take a few days to process due to Instagram’s account action limitation rules. Blocking is the only way to get rid of ‘Ghosts’ as sadly the Ghost Busters don’t operate on Instagram.
Why am I bothered? Well, there’s lots of articles online that state ‘Ghosts’ affect your engagement rate and impact on your chances of appearing to on your genuine followers. I’m not sure how accurate they are, but I’d sure like to get to a place where I know my following is genuine, honest, engaging and loyal.
So over the next few weeks you will most likely see my following decrease. But I’m o.k. with that because I know who the regular likers and commenters are. I believe I get between 10-15 genuine followers a week and you know what, I’m really happy with that. After all, it’s not quantity it’s quality that matters.
Don’t worry, I’ll continue to produce good quality, engaging content for you all and we’ll carry on sharing our experiences with each other no matter how big or small we are.
